Tour of Carvings
at Vallecito Lake

In the aftermath of the 2002 Missionary Ridge fire, local artist Chad Haspels began to create these carvings that represent the community’s rebirth despite such devastating loss. One firefighter, Alan Wyatt, lost his life while battling the fire. You can view his memorial carving here.

At the very top of each carving, Haspels made sure to include a special dedication to the 2002 fire by including a visual of fire. This is depicted in the Tour of Carvings logo. As you begin your tour, take special note of this addition that can be found on the tops of each carving.

Now, you can take the Tour of Carvings and view each individual carving and learn about their unique representation of the Vallecito Lake community’s efforts to restore the valley.

Missionary Ridge Fire

In June and July of 2002, the Missionary Ridge fire burned over 70,000 acres in the Durango and Vallecito Lake area. Of the 70,000 acres that were burned, 13,000 of these were considered to have been severely burned, which causes erosion and debris flow. Much of this severe burning occurred directly surrounding Vallecito Lake.

Authorities said that the intensity of the Missionary Ridge fire can be related to severe drought, high temperatures, low humidity, and overgrown trees. After 39 days of burn, firefighters were able to secure a full perimeter around the fire. One firefighter lost his life, while many others fought diligently.
